King Tides Close Juno Beach Pier After Waves Knock Out Deck Panels

The Juno Beach Pier is closed until further notice after this week's king tides and high surf knocked deck panels loose, leaving gaps in the walkway, CBS12 reported Tuesday.

Aerial video shows panels popped out of the deck, though the pier itself is still standing. Loggerhead Marinelife Center, which manages the pier, blamed the damage on offshore surge and high surf. No reopening date has been announced.

Repairs were already underway

The damage hit a pier that was already in the middle of a nearly $1.3 million project to replace its decking and railings. Routine inspections had flagged the need for upgrades, and work began June 1 in phases designed to keep much of the pier open to visitors.

Beach access points closed

The Town of Juno Beach also closed four beach access points on Monday because of unsafe conditions:

  • JB-2
  • JB-3: stairs severely damaged
  • JB-4 and JB-6: erosion and other hazards

Flooding farther south

King tides also pushed water onto roads along the southern county coast. In Manalapan, a car was stranded in standing water on Tuesday, and water spread across South Ocean Boulevard. The Town of Palm Beach reported flooding near the Lantana Bridge, rerouted traffic and blocked southbound lanes at Lake Avenue, allowing local access to some properties.

Warnings through Wednesday night

The National Weather Service kept a coastal flood warning and high surf advisory in effect for coastal Palm Beach County through 8 p.m. Wednesday, warning of significant coastal flooding, dangerous rip currents and breaking waves of 8 to 13 feet in the surf zone.

King tides are unusually high tides that occur when the moon and sun line up in certain positions. Wind and rain can push water levels even higher.

Until conditions settle, stay out of rough surf, obey closed signs at beach access points and avoid driving through flooded roads.
