Sargassum Seaweed Hits Jupiter Beach During Memorial Day Weekend
Visitors heading to Jupiter Beach this Memorial Day weekend were greeted by large amounts of sargassum seaweed washing ashore across parts of the coastline.
The brown seaweed, which has been appearing across South Florida beaches in recent weeks, was especially noticeable along the shoreline Sunday and Monday as holiday crowds arrived to enjoy the long weekend.
Despite the seaweed conditions, many beachgoers still made the most of the day, with swimmers, surfers, and families spreading out across the sand under sunny skies.
JupiterBrief stopped by the beach and also spotted pelicans actively diving for fish just offshore, creating a classic Florida scene even as the seaweed drifted in with the tide.
Sargassum is a naturally occurring floating seaweed found in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.
Large blooms can develop during warmer months and are often carried toward Florida beaches by ocean currents and wind patterns. While the seaweed itself is generally harmless, heavy buildup can create a strong odor as it decomposes and may make beach access less enjoyable for some visitors.
Local officials have not announced any beach closures related to the seaweed, though conditions can change daily depending on tides and weather.
According to reports, Palm Beach County beaches from Jupiter to Lake Worth Beach have seen increased sargassum activity over Memorial Day weekend. (wflx.com)
Residents and visitors planning beach trips this week may want to check local beach cameras and conditions before heading out.
