Live Like Jake 5K Raises Over $135,000 for Child Drowning Prevention in Jupiter
More than 1,400 runners and walkers turned downtown Abacoa into a sea of neon on April 25th, raising over $135,000 to prevent childhood drowning during the 12th Annual Live Like Jake 5K.
The event, held at Abacoa Amphitheatre on Main Street, has become one of Jupiter's most beloved community gatherings - and one of its most important. All proceeds fund self-rescue swim lesson scholarships and water safety programs throughout Palm Beach County.
"Wear Bright, Stay in Sight" was this year's theme, with participants donning neon outfits to kick off Water Safety Month in colorful style. The race honors the memory of Jake Roarke Morrison, whose family has championed drowning prevention efforts since his tragic death.
The morning festivities began at 7 a.m. and included far more than just a 5K run. Families enjoyed a pre-race warm-up, a "Who's the Brightest" costume contest, and a Kids Dash for younger participants. Local bike shop J-Town Bikes donated a bicycle for the raffle, while CharMar Dance Studio performed and musician Ricky Williams premiered an original song written for the event.
A KidsZone play area, live DJ, food vendors, and complimentary beer for runners over 21 rounded out the celebration, turning the race into an all-morning community party.
The $135,000 raised will directly fund swim lesson scholarships for children who might not otherwise have access to water safety training - a critical need in a coastal community like Jupiter where pools, canals, and the ocean are part of daily life.
The Live Like Jake Foundation has made drowning prevention its mission, providing resources and education to families throughout the region. The annual 5K has grown from a small memorial run into one of Palm Beach County's largest charity races, with participation increasing each year.
Drowning remains a leading cause of death for young children in Florida, making water safety education particularly vital in Jupiter's waterfront neighborhoods. The foundation's swim lesson scholarships teach children self-rescue techniques that can save their lives.
