Jupiter Middle School Mourns Longtime Teacher Kevin Burns After Water Accident

JUPITER — The Jupiter Middle School community is mourning longtime teacher Kevin Burns, who died Friday evening after being caught in a strong current while snorkeling off the Jupiter coast.

Burns taught U.S. History and Civics at Jupiter Middle School for more than 20 years and was remembered by colleagues and family as a positive presence in the classroom and a familiar face on Jupiter's waters.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, Burns and a friend paddle boarded approximately half a mile offshore to a reef in the 3000 block of South A1A on Friday, Aug. 14.

The two secured their paddleboards at the reef and entered the water to snorkel. While they were in the water, the current grew stronger and carried them away from their boards, authorities said.

After realizing they could not swim against the current to reach the paddleboards, the two decided to swim toward shore.

Burns’ friend reached the beach but realized Burns had not returned and was no longer visible. He called 911.

Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue responded, and a PBSO helicopter later located Burns in the water north of the reef where the paddleboards had been secured.

Burns was transported to Jupiter Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A beloved Jupiter teacher

Jupiter Middle School Principal Lisa Hastey shared news of Burns’ death with families and staff over the weekend, describing him as a beloved member of the school’s Mariner family who had dedicated more than two decades to teaching.

Burns’ impact extended well beyond his classroom.

Colleagues told WPTV that he was known for his optimism and love of the ocean. Early-morning paddles were part of his routine, and he would often send friends photos of the sunrise before beginning the school day.

One former student reportedly shared that Burns had inspired her to become a history teacher herself.

About 70 teachers and parents gathered after his death was confirmed to remember him, according to WPTV.

Support available at Jupiter Middle

Counselors are at Jupiter Middle School this week to help students and staff cope with the loss. Additional counselors from the School District of Palm Beach County’s Department of Behavioral and Mental Health are also providing support, along with School Police and a therapy dog.

Hastey encouraged families to have students speak with someone at school if they need additional support.

Burns’ family told WPTV they are planning a celebration of life near the water in Jupiter — a fitting setting for someone whose love for the ocean was such a significant part of his life.

For generations of Jupiter Middle students and colleagues, Burns leaves behind more than two decades of memories, lessons and an enduring impact on the community.
