Jupiter Farms Keeps Its Rural Identity: County Votes to Block 980-Student Private School
It was standing room only at the Palm Beach County Commission chambers — and when the gavel fell, Jupiter Farms got the answer many of its residents had been fighting for.
Commissioners voted to deny a proposal by Calvary Church to build a private K-12 Christian school in Jupiter Farms that would have served up to 980 students. The vote came after hours of emotional public testimony that laid bare deep divisions in the community over growth, traffic, and the future of one of South Florida's last truly rural neighborhoods.
What Was Proposed
Calvary Church had sought approval to construct a large-scale private school campus in Jupiter Farms — a sprawling, low-density community west of Jupiter known for its horse properties, dirt roads, and neighbors who largely moved there to escape exactly the kind of density this project would have brought.
The proposal was for a K–12 school with capacity for nearly 1,000 students. County staff had already recommended denial before the meeting, citing concerns about compatibility with the area's rural land-use designation.
What Residents Said
The public hearing drew a packed room. Speakers on both sides were passionate. Those opposing the school pointed to the impact on already-stressed roads, the mismatch with Jupiter Farms' agricultural and rural character, and fears that approving a project of this scale would open the door to further development pressure in the area.
Supporters of the school argued it would serve faith-based families in the region and provide an educational option not currently available locally. Some pointed out that a private school can actually reduce traffic compared to public schools drawing from a wider area.
In the end, the concerns about rural character and traffic won the day.
What It Means for the Community
For Jupiter Farms residents who have spent years watching neighboring communities transform, the denial is a meaningful win — a signal that the county is listening when communities push back on development that doesn't fit.
Jupiter Farms sits just west of Jupiter and has long resisted the kind of suburban creep that has reshaped much of Palm Beach County. This vote reinforces its rural land-use protections, at least for now.
The question of where growing faith-based families in the area will send their kids — and whether another proposal might follow — remains open.
