Jupiter beat Tampa 9–1 Sunday in Game 1 of the Florida State League Championship Series.

TAMPA, Fla. — A standard pitcher’s duel quickly turned into a runaway blowout on Sunday afternoon.

Powered by a explosive seven-run top of the ninth inning, the Jupiter Hammerheads blew open a tight game to hand the Tampa Tarpons a 9–1 loss in Game 1 of the Florida State League (FSL) Championship Series at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

With the victory, the Hammerheads pull within one win of securing their second FSL title in franchise history.

Pitchers Lock Horns Early

For the first six innings, dominated starting pitching dictated the pace.

  • Jake Clemente started on the bump for Jupiter, working through early traffic to keep Tampa off the scoreboard.
  • Justin West matched him frame-for-frame for Tampa. West escaped a bases-loaded jam in the opening frame before cruising through five scoreless innings, piling up seven strikeouts to keep the game tied 0–0.

Through six innings, the two clubs had combined to leave nine runners stranded on base as neither offense could find the dynamic hit.

Hammerheads Strike First, Tarpons Answer

Jupiter finally shattered the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh.

  1. Echedry Vargas drew a one-out walk to spark the rally.
  2. Luis Arana smashed an RBI double into left-center field, driving in Vargas for the game’s first run.
  3. Moments later with Arana on third, a balk called on the mound allowed Arana to cross the plate, expanding Jupiter's lead to 2–0.

Tampa responded immediately in the bottom of the seventh when Luis Escudero launched a solo home run into the right-field bleachers, bringing the Tarpons within a run at 2–1.

The 9th-Inning Explosion

Holding onto a fragile 2–1 lead entering the top of the ninth, Jupiter turned a close contest into a rout by sending 11 batters to the plate.

  • Jacob Lombard and Eric Guevara kicked off the scoring floodgate with back-to-back RBI singles.
  • A wild pitch and an RBI walk from Carlos Sanchez added two more to the tally.

  • Echedry Vargas delivered the knock-out blow with a two-run single to center field, capping off a 2-for-5 afternoon.
  • Luis Arana rounded out the seven-run frame with an infield groundout RBI.

Reliever Davidxon Lara shut the door in the bottom of the ninth, retiring the Tarpons in order to seal the 9–1 victory.
