Hammerheads Keep Rolling as Playoff-Bound Season Heads Into Final Stretch

JUPITER — The Jupiter Hammerheads are heading toward the final weeks of the regular season with a playoff spot already secured — and they’re giving local fans more reasons to pay attention along the way.

The Hammerheads defeated the St. Lucie Mets 3-1 Saturday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, clinching the six-game series and improving to 57-55 overall and 20-26 in the second half.

Jupiter struck first in the second inning when Luis Cova doubled home a run. An inning later, Jacob Lombard launched a two-run homer, giving the Hammerheads a 3-0 advantage.

That was enough support for starter Dameivi Tineo, who worked six innings and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out five. Engel Peralta and Tristan Stevens followed with scoreless innings before Yohanfer Santana made an impressive Jupiter debut, touching 100 mph and striking out the final two hitters to earn the save.

A Strong Week Against St. Lucie

Saturday’s victory continued a productive homestand for Jupiter.

The Hammerheads opened the series with a 3-2 comeback win Tuesday, erupted for a 16-8 victory Wednesday, dropped Thursday’s game 7-2 and rebounded with another 3-2 win Friday.

The recent run adds another positive chapter to a season that has already guaranteed Jupiter postseason baseball.

Earlier this summer, the Hammerheads won the Florida State League East first-half title and clinched a playoff berth, their first trip back to the postseason since winning the FSL championship in 2023.

The second half has been more uneven, but Jupiter continues to showcase some of the young talent working its way through the Miami Marlins organization.

Young Talent Driving the Hammerheads

One of Jupiter’s biggest run producers has been Echedry Vargas.

Vargas hit his team-leading 19th home run of the season Thursday, then followed it with a two-run single Friday that pushed his total to a league-leading 69 RBIs.

Outfielder Andres Valor has been another major contributor.

Valor was named the Florida State League’s Player of the Month for July and continued to make an impact Saturday, going 2-for-4 with a double while stealing his league-leading 51st base of the season.

Players such as Vargas, Valor and Lombard have helped give Hammerheads fans a glimpse at some of the talent developing within the Marlins’ system, while young pitchers such as Santana are beginning to make their own impressions.

What’s Next for Jupiter

After wrapping up the home series against St. Lucie on Sunday, the Hammerheads head across the state for a six-game road series against the Bradenton Marauders from Aug. 18-23.

They’ll then return to Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium for another six-game homestand, this time against the Tampa Tarpons from Aug. 25-30.

That series will also feature several familiar ballpark promotions:

• Friday, Aug. 28: Bark in the Park

And Tampa won’t be the final stop on the regular-season schedule.

Jupiter is also scheduled to face St. Lucie again from Sept. 1-6, giving the Hammerheads one more series before turning their attention fully toward postseason baseball.

For a Single-A club, wins and losses tell only part of the story. Every game is also another opportunity for a prospect to take a step forward — whether that’s Vargas driving in runs, Valor creating pressure on the bases, Lombard supplying power or Santana lighting up the radar gun.

But as this season heads toward September, the Hammerheads have something else to play for.

They’ve already earned their place in the postseason.

Now, the final weeks are about building momentum for what comes next.
