Could Florida Homeowners Stop Paying Property Taxes? Here’s What DeSantis Proposed

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a major new proposal this week that could dramatically reduce — and eventually eliminate — property taxes for many Florida homeowners.

The proposal would significantly increase Florida’s homestead exemption, with DeSantis saying roughly 60% of homesteaded homeowners could eventually pay no property taxes on their primary residence.

For homeowners in communities like Jupiter and across Palm Beach County, the announcement is already generating major discussion around affordability, housing costs, and how local governments would fund services in the future.

What Is Being Proposed?

Under the plan announced Tuesday, Florida’s homestead exemption would increase to $250,000 for qualifying primary residences.

Currently, Florida homeowners can receive homestead tax exemptions that reduce the taxable value of their home. DeSantis says the expanded exemption could eliminate property taxes entirely for many homeowners, especially those with lower assessed home values.

The governor also said he supports exploring the long-term elimination of homestead property taxes altogether in Florida.

Supporters argue the move could provide meaningful relief for homeowners facing rising insurance costs, higher home prices, and increasing monthly expenses.

Why This Matters in Jupiter

Property taxes are a major expense for many homeowners in northern Palm Beach County, especially as property values have continued to climb in recent years.

For residents in Jupiter, Tequesta, and surrounding communities, lower property taxes could potentially save thousands of dollars per year.

The proposal may especially interest:

Retirees on fixed incomes

First-time homebuyers

Longtime Florida residents

Families struggling with rising housing and insurance costs

Critics Raise Questions

While many homeowners may welcome lower taxes, critics say the proposal could create funding challenges for local governments, schools, fire departments, police services, parks, and infrastructure projects.

Property taxes currently help fund many local services throughout Palm Beach County and municipalities across Florida.

At this stage, the proposal is still in the discussion phase, and lawmakers would need to approve any major tax changes.

What Happens Next?

DeSantis has called for lawmakers to explore the proposal further during a potential special legislative session.

If approved by the Florida Legislature, some portions could eventually require voter approval through a statewide constitutional amendment.

For now, the proposal is expected to remain a major topic of debate across Florida.
