The missing person was identified as 48-year-old Matt Pawlowski. The Coast Guard said he was last seen on Monday, Sept. 14, at 9 a.m. heading east aboard a 14-foot lime green and yellow paddleboard four miles off Jupiter Beach.

September 20 Update: The U.S. Coast Guard said that it's calling off the search for a paddleboarder who went missing off the coast of Jupiter earlier this week — though they'll start again if anything new comes up.

The search for 48-year-old Matt Pawlowski lasted more than four days.

Coast Guard crews and their partner agencies covered roughly 28,490 square miles — an area about the size of West Virginia.

"The decision to suspend an active search is one of the most difficult decisions we make, and it comes only after every reasonable effort to locate the missing person has been exhausted," said Capt. Frank Florio, commander of Coast Guard Sector Miami. "Our crews and partner agencies searched tirelessly for Matt. I am deeply grateful to everyone who answered the call and supported this extensive search. Our hearts are with Matt's family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time."
