A Rare 1900 Photograph Captures Billy Bowlegs III and Family in Jupiter

JUPITER, Fla. — More than a century ago, a family gathered for a photograph that would become a lasting piece of Jupiter's history.

Taken around 1900, the image features Billy Bowlegs III alongside several family members, offering a rare glimpse into the people who called Jupiter home during the area's earliest years.

According to historical records accompanying the photograph, those pictured include:

  • Minnie Moore Wilson, standing at the left
  • Billy Bowlegs III, second from the left
  • Willson Tiger, at the far right

The photograph serves as an important reminder that Jupiter's history extends well beyond its modern neighborhoods, marinas, and beaches. Long before the town experienced significant growth, the region was home to Native American communities whose history remains deeply connected to South Florida.

Billy Bowlegs III was a descendant of the Seminole leader Billy Bowlegs, one of the best-known leaders during the Seminole Wars of the 1800s. While his ancestor became a prominent historical figure, this photograph captures a quieter moment in everyday life—one that reflects the families who continued to live and build communities throughout the region.

Historic photographs from this period are relatively uncommon, making images like this especially valuable. They help preserve not only the faces of those who lived here but also the diverse cultural heritage that shaped Jupiter into the community it is today.

As Jupiter continues to grow, photographs such as this provide an opportunity to pause and appreciate the people whose stories are woven into the town's past. They remind us that local history is not only found in landmarks and museums, but also in the lives of the families who helped define the area's identity.
