A Great Catch from 1935: Jupiter's Long Tradition of Surf Fishing Lives On

JUPITER, Fla. — Long before modern fishing rods, GPS navigation, and high-tech tackle became commonplace, anglers were already enjoying the rich waters off Jupiter's coastline.

One remarkable photograph from 1935 captures that tradition perfectly. It shows Charles Marry of Layton Park proudly holding a round pompano he caught while surf fishing on a Jupiter beach—a snapshot of a pastime that has connected generations of locals and visitors alike.

Pompano have long been considered one of Florida's most prized game fish. Known for their speed, strong fight, and excellent table fare, they have attracted surf anglers to Jupiter's beaches for well over a century.
