$16 Million Jupiter Lighthouse Erosion Project Nears Completion — Ribbon Cutting Set for December 3

One of Jupiter's most recognizable landmarks is getting a major upgrade and it's almost finished.

A $16 million shoreline stabilization project at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse is in its final months, bringing new public amenities and critical erosion protections after nearly 18 months of construction. The official ribbon cutting is scheduled for December 3.

Peter DeWitt of the Bureau of Land Management showed off the progress this week, including a new 830-foot boardwalk that follows the shoreline around the lighthouse. Seven staircases provide beach access along the walk, and a new retaining wall anchors 22,000 plants being installed throughout the property.

The work addresses a long-running erosion problem that had been eating away at the surrounding land at a rate of about 7 feet per year.

"All of that going into the Intracoastal Waterway and out the inlet — with that, vegetation causing problems for boaters because the vegetation would float just below the surface, and dangers along the shoreline from the dune collapsing," DeWitt said.

The project does carry some compromise. The boating community raised concerns about future access to an area that could see 40 to 60 boats on a busy weekend. In response, several dedicated boating bays were established on the lagoon side of the lighthouse property.

Jupiter resident Julia Ferguson, who visited the site with a group of paddleboarders this week, said the trade-off makes sense even if it stings a little.

"We're disappointed about it because it's a great place. But we also understand living here — we have seen so much erosion of the sand up to the lighthouse, and so we knew it was a matter of time," Ferguson said.

DeWitt said the goal is to make the area a true multi-use site, with regular public fishing programs also planned once the project is complete.

The ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for December 3.
