11 Dogs Rescued from Filthy Lake Worth Home Are Now Up for Adoption at Jupiter's Furry Friends Humane Society
Eleven dogs rescued from a Lake Worth-area home after deputies found them living in deplorable conditions are now recovering at Furry Friends Humane Society in Jupiter — and all are available for adoption.
Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies initially went to the home near Atlantis and Lantana on August 22 to serve a felony warrant for the teenage son of 34-year-old Leslie Torres. When they looked inside, a separate investigation began.
What they found was described in a 16-page arrest report: two rusted wire cages stacked on top of each other in a hallway, seven dogs crammed inside with no food or water, and animals living in feces and urine throughout the home. Four additional dogs were found elsewhere on the property; two remain at the home.
Torres was arrested Wednesday on 11 felony animal cruelty charges. She was released on a $52,000 bond and has a court hearing scheduled next month.
The rescued dogs have been at Furry Friends for about a month. Adoption counselor Nick Ferola told WPBF the animals are turning a corner.
"The happy ending will be when they get adopted," Ferola said. "They're doing really good right now. It's good to see that they're playful. They're hopping around being happy and healthy."
Ferola said the primary concerns after dogs are kept in such conditions are dehydration, illness, and fear of movement from being unable to move freely. "What usually happens in situations like that is dehydration, sickness. Dogs in those situations tend to generate a lot of fear."
All 11 dogs are available for adoption through Furry Friends Humane Society. Applications can be submitted at ffhumane.org/adopt.
