Gas Leak Shuts Down Indiantown Road at I-95 for Most of Thursday
A gas leak shut down Indiantown Road between Interstate 95 and Maplewood Drive for most of Thursday, October 22, causing long backups through one of Jupiter's busiest corridors. All lanes reopened at about 5:10 p.m., and the town said the leak had been repaired, CBS12 reported.
What happened
Jupiter police and fire crews responded at about 10:30 a.m. to a reported leak just east of Island Way and closed the westbound lanes, the Palm Beach Post reported. The eastbound lanes were closed at about 2 p.m., shutting the road in both directions.
A Town of Jupiter official said a construction crew had hit a gas line, according to WPTV and WFLX. Earlier in the day, the Post reported that the source of the leak was not immediately clear.
None of the reports mentioned evacuations or injuries, and none named the gas utility or the construction company involved.
Afternoon detours
While the road was closed, eastbound drivers were sent onto I-95, and westbound drivers were diverted at Maplewood Drive and Central Boulevard. Drivers heading west to Jupiter Farms were told to take Alternate A1A or Military Trail south to Donald Ross Road, then I-95 north to Indiantown Road. CBS12 said the closure caused extensive delays for much of the afternoon.
Indiantown Road is the main route between the coast, I-95 and Jupiter Farms, so a closure at the interchange leaves western residents with few alternatives. The town said it would post more updates if any become available.
