Free Seeds, No Returns: Jupiter Library's Seed Library Helps You Start a Garden

The Jupiter Branch Library has something you won't find on most library shelves: free seeds you can take home and plant, with no need to bring anything back.

The branch's seed library, run by the Palm Beach County Library System, lets visitors take up to five small packets of vegetable and flower seeds each month, The Sunshine Republic reported. The program launched in December 2023 with help from the Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners and the Abacoa Community Garden.

How it works

• Stop by the branch at 705 Military Trail and choose up to five packets per month.
• The seeds are yours to plant. Nothing is returned.
• Seeds can't be reserved, requested or sent to another branch, so selection depends on what's on hand that day.

The launch announcement highlighted varieties such as the Floridade tomato, which the library described as frost-resistant. Varieties change, so check with the branch before making a special trip.

Good timing

Fall is the start of South Florida's main vegetable season, when many crops that struggle in summer heat grow best. For advice on what to plant and when, along with sun, soil and container needs, the University of Florida IFAS Extension publishes Florida-specific guides, and the county's Master Gardeners answer questions from home gardeners.

The Master Gardeners also give free talks at the Jupiter library. The next one, on flower gardening and edible blossoms, is Sunday, November 8, at 3:30 p.m.

If you'd rather garden with company, the Abacoa Community Garden at 1022 Community Drive welcomes neighbors on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon.

The library asks that you take only what you plan to plant, so there's enough for the next gardener.
